Jon Zens is known as an expert on House Church and is the editor of Searching Together Journal. Ken Welker owns theseedtraining.org and consults with Christian organizations and individuals.
I have known Jon Zens since before 1990. While I visit traditional churches, I have been part of the home fellowship movement for about twenty years. Maybe thirty. I am more of a writer than a speaker, but I can do both. Many years ago Jon asked me to write an article for his journal, and as a part of that, I received a free copy of the said journal. In addition to getting his journal, Jon often sends me copies of his newest books.
Recently Jon sent me a copy of his newest book, Jesus is Family. I was very moved by it and shared it with my fellowship that meets in my fellowship room. Ken is the other leader there. He owns the building and has an office in the basement. We are good friends, so even though Ken and his wife and their daughter and her husband Brent, spend so much time with me that they think we all live together. We don’t live together, but we spend a great deal of time together.
When I told them I had known the author of Jesus is Family, for many years, they wanted to meet him. I contacted Jon to see if he would get together for some Q and A. Jon was thrilled. It took a few weeks to get something together that met with our schedules.
Jon suggested that we meet at Pure and Simple foods store café with a petting zoo.

We talked as a group for about an hour over soup and sandwiches and traded testimonies. Then the mothers and grandmothers headed over to the petting zoo area. Ken and I asked Jon questions and shared comments in a mini-conference in the outside sitting area, Jon brought his audio equipment. We sat up in the outdoor tables area; I think we were all surprised at the quality of the interview. Despite the zooming of autos and truck on the highway, the crunch of visitor’s tires and the caws and braying of the petting zoo animals. Jon Zens has been quoted in many journals and books concerning both House Churches and general Christian issues. I have been part of a fellowship with Brent and Ken for about five years.
We discussed many topics including:
- What do you do for children in a home fellowship?
- The importance of relationship in home fellowships.
- What do you do about couples who live together but do not have an official marriage license?
- Home fellowships/cell groups and traditional fellowships. What is the difference?
- Known problems with Specialty doctrines and Traditional Church Bashing in home fellowships.
- The difference between spiritual elders and natural elders.
- How Jesus uses child-rearing and relationship issues to teach lessons on Home Fellowship.
