A Fish Story
One of the signs of the end times is the growing number of cult movements.
Many Christians come to the place where they think they are on the cutting edge spiritually when they have merely began following the lies of a religious spirit. Perhaps a decade ago I was introduced to a family who had been kicked out of several churches. While they were a bit stiff religiously they were a nice family. It didn’t take long until I found out just why they kept getting the left foot of fellowship.
They had read a so called Christian book that stated that Jesus and his disciples were all vegetarians. More so, the book claimed that whenever any Bible recorded Jesus or the disciples fishing or eating fish that was the result of mistranslation. The truth according to the false teaching of the prophetess author was that they actually ate fish-plants.
In Genesis 9.1-5 we read:
Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. “But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal.” (NIV)
First I mentioned that the Lord commanded Noah after the flood that they were free to eat animal flesh as long as they did not drink the blood. Then I asked the deceived family about the Old Testament sacrifices of bulls, sheep, goats, and birds that some of which was later eaten by the priests according to God’s own law.
Of course they didn’t have a ready answer for that but then decided that those scriptures must have been corrupted as well to hide the fact that Jesus and the disciples were strictly vegetarians and didn’t go fishing but only harvested fish-plants. They said they would be praying for the Lord to remove my spiritual blinders so that I could see the truth. I said I would be doing the same for them. I was never invited back.
All this to say, we all make mistakes scripturally or have misunderstandings, but if we have humility and a teachable spirit the Lord will make our way straight. If we are open to the Lord’s correction He works on bringing us out of error and into the truth. The problem comes when we are so blinded or so full of pride that we won’t take correction and keep traveling farther down the road into error.
