Return of the Honky-Tonk Prodigal

On Dec 16, 2016, about 15 minutes after three in the morning, I had a song in a dream. I not only was dreaming the song but woke up singing a section of the lyrics, just like with “I woke up Singing to You, Jesus”.

During the dream, I was seeing through the eyes of a country music singer. I didn’t recognize him.  At the end of the dream the scene changed. My perspective changed as well. The cowboy singer had been replaced.

Now I appeared in the dream with a few Christian friends.  After handing one of them a tape recorder, I said, “Make sure to record me as I wake up! I am having another song in a dream.  I don’t want to forget it!”

When I woke up I was singing the following section of lyrics:

“Your time in the world,

is at an end, repent of your sin,

come follow me, and make fishers of men.”

I could also remember the phrase “bad-bad-bad-bad”. Otherwise I just remembered some of the scenes in the dream and gist of what the song was about.  I went to my computer and recorded the first part of the audio and wrote down a rough draft of the song.

“Your time in the world,

Is at an end,

Repent of your sin,

Come follow me,

And make fishers of men.”

Back in the days

When I was young

I had heard the call

And promised you all.

At first it went well.

I had your story to tell.

I served you Jesus

With all of my heart.

Then I left my first love

To wallow in swill.

I lusted for fame.

I lusted for love.

I lusted for gold

And the life in the dark,

The life in the dark,

my worldly songs would impart.

Yes, I went bad,

I went bad, bad-bad-bad-bad

I got lost in the dark

and lost in the world.

When I was down,

down in the pit,

down in the filth,

and down on my self

I remembered a day

Back in Sunday School.

Like the prodigal son,

I had lost all my fame,

Lost all my friends,

Lost all my funds,

And jostled with swine

for slop from the trough.

Then I saw you Lord,

bright as big neon sign,

I watched you, Lord,

hold out your nail-scarred hands.

You called me back,

Back from the world,

Back into your arms,

Back into your fold.

You said, “Your time in the world,

Is at an end,

Repent of your sin,

Come follow Me

And make fishers of men.”

If you’ll come back,

I’ll renew your heart,

Give you new clothes,

Give you a gold ring,

And I will serve a banquet for you.

I took Jesus’ arms,

As He lifted me up.

He hugged me real close

And then He said,

“Your time in the world,

Is at an end,

Repent of your sin,

Come follow me,

And make fishers of men.”

I cried, “My time in the world,

Is at an end,

I repent of my sin,

I will follow you

And make fishers of men.”

He said, “Your time in the world,

Is at an end,

Repent of your sin,

Come follow me,

And make fishers of men.”
